From Scratch Pizza Night Using Homemade Sourdough Pizza Dough
Farmhouse on Boone’s Dough Recipe · Four Variations · One very happy family
Some nights, supper becomes more than just a meal. This was one of those nights. We gathered the girls, welcomed our niece and in-laws into the kitchen, and set out to make homemade pizza from scratch — using Farmhouse on Boone’s beloved sourdough pizza dough recipe — and what unfolded was one of those slow, warm, wonderfully messy evenings that I want to bottle up and keep forever.
There’s something that happens when you put an apron on a child and hand her a job to do. She stands up a little straighter. She takes it seriously. And then she starts sneaking pepperoni. By the way, having a child help with sourdough pizza dough makes the process even more memorable.
The Dough that started it all
I’d been eyeing Farmhouse on Boone’s sourdough pizza dough for a while. If you know Lisa’s blog, you know she doesn’t do anything halfway — her recipes are the kind that become family staples. I finally made the leap, and I’m so glad I did. The dough came together beautifully, and after its time to rest and develop, it was everything you want in a pizza base: crisp on the outside, with that tender, doughy chew in the middle that tells you real fermentation did its work. No store-bought crust holds a candle to it.
“The dough crisped up so perfectly on the bottom — that satisfying crunch — while staying wonderfully soft and doughy through the middle. It’s the kind of crust that makes you rethink delivery forever.”
Four pizzas, four personalities
We made four different pies, and every single one disappeared. Each person in the family found their pizza — which is really the whole point of a pizza night, isn’t it? For us, making pizza starts with mixing dough, especially sourdough, to create the perfect crust.
Classic Pepperoni The crowd-pleaser. Red sauce, mozzarella, and all the pepperoni you can fit. This one didn’t last five minutes.
Pineapple Yes, pineapple. And yes, it was delicious. Sweet and savory in the best way — no apologies here.
White Sauce & Chicken A creamy white sauce base topped with tender chicken. Rich, satisfying, and honestly a little fancy for a Tuesday. Sourdough pizza dough forms the foundation for all these creative pies.
White Sauce, Mozzarella & Goat Cheese: The grown-up pie. The tang of goat cheese against the creamy white sauce was something special.
The real ingredient: everyone together
Our niece was right there in the thick of it — stretching dough, sprinkling cheese, deliberating very seriously over toppings. Our in-laws brought their presence and their appetite, and there’s something grounding about cooking alongside family that spans generations. Everyone had a role. Everyone contributed. And everyone sat down at the same table with something they’d helped make. Naturally, the sourdough pizza dough brought everyone together through the baking.
That’s the gift of a meal like this. It isn’t really about the pizza at all — though the pizza was outstanding. It’s about the hour before dinner. When the kitchen is warm and a little chaotic, someone is laughing about a topping choice, and the girls are more engaged than they’ve been all day. There’s craftiness in it. Creativity in the kitchen and quiet pride of making something with your hands and sharing it with the people you love most. In fact, the joy of mixing sourdough with pizza dough for a family meal cannot be understated.
