What Are You Storing for Eternity?
Matthew 13:44
I have a special perspective on people’s lives. I witness the legacy they leave behind—the cherished belongings, the family, and the memories—when they leave this world. As a hospice nurse, I come to know my patients in their final days and weeks. I arrive at their homes when they pass, where I see the furniture, photos, favorite clothes, and the loved ones—nieces, nephews, spouses—who remain. These moments often make me think of the Matthew 13:44 hidden treasure, and remind me of the deep bonds and the lasting impact left behind as they enter eternity.
These experiences often lead me to reflect more deeply on what awaits each of us beyond this life. Then, my mind shifts to their eternity.
What did they have stored away for their eternity?
This question naturally brings to mind the words of Jesus in the parable of the hidden treasure. Matthew 13:44 says “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then, in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
This parable Jesus tells depicts a man finding the kingdom of heaven (hidden treasure). Though many may search for this treasure, it is not as obvious as an unwrapped Christmas present under the tree on Christmas morning. It is buried and undisclosed; it must be searched for.
From Matthew 13:44 to Proverbs: The Hidden Treasure of Wisdom
Similarly, the pursuit of wisdom described in Proverbs echoes the idea of seeking what is truly valuable. Proverbs 2:4 says, “ If you seek it like silver and search for it as hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find knowledge of God.” In verse 3, you see that the [it] referred to is wisdom. Wisdom is a gift from God through God’s Word, but it requires active pursuit on our behalf.
Proverbs speaks of wisdom many times; Proverbs 23:23 says to buy truth and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. In the ESV, the word wisdom is personified in Proverbs 8. Proverbs 8:12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.” Verse 17 states “I [wisdom] love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. . 1 Corinthians 1:24 fulfills this Old Testament prophecy,
“Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.”
Matthew 13:44 goes on to say, “then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” When I study my Bible, I love to get lost in the cross-references. I marvel at how God wove His infallible Word together across a dozen authors, thousands of years, and a vast land — and yet it speaks with one unified voice. My study Bible points me to Matthew 25:9 — “but the wise answered, saying, since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves oil in the lamp.”
Reflecting on wisdom, faith, and legacy, I find that the true treasure is not simply knowledge or even acts of love — it is the person of Jesus Christ Himself. He is the Worthy One. He offers not just answers, but abundant life, hope, and eternal joy. The hidden treasure of the kingdom of heaven, as Jesus describes in Matthew 13:44, is nothing less than Him.
SelL everything for the Hidden treasure
Matthew 13:44 ends with a man who, in his joy, sells everything to obtain the hidden treasure of the kingdom of heaven. That is the invitation extended to each of us. Earthly possessions and achievements will fade — I see that truth every day in my work. But the assurance of belonging to Christ endures. May we seek not just wisdom, but the One in whom wisdom dwells. Jesus is worth more than anything this world can offer. His kingdom is the greatest treasure we could ever find.
Scripture proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:12). The apostle Paul wrote, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). In Christ, all the searching and longing of the human heart finds its fulfillment.
I witness that peace and hope are most deeply rooted in those who know Jesus as their greatest treasure. Earthly possessions and achievements fade, but the assurance of belonging to Him endures.
May we seek not just wisdom, but the One in whom wisdom dwells. May we recognize that Jesus is worth more than anything this world can offer, and that His kingdom is the greatest treasure we could ever find.
